Walks in the UK rarely stay dry for long. Rain, muddy fields and beach days are part of life with a dog, and fabric collars and leads soak it all up. Waterproof webbing is the practical alternative.

Why waterproof webbing?

Waterproof webbing is coated so water, mud and sand sit on the surface instead of soaking in. In everyday use that means:

  • It wipes clean with a damp cloth
  • It dries quickly, so it is ready for the next walk
  • It is less likely to hold on to wet-dog smells
  • It stays comfortable in the hand when wet

Fitting a collar correctly

You should be able to slide two fingers flat between the collar and your dog’s neck. Too loose and it can slip over the head; too tight and it rubs. Check the fit again as puppies grow and as coats thicken in winter.

In the UK, the Control of Dogs Order 1992 requires dogs in public places to wear a collar with the owner’s name and address on it or on an attached tag. Microchipping is a separate legal requirement and does not replace the tag.

Choosing a lead

A standard fixed-length lead gives you consistent control near roads and in busy areas. Look for a secure clip, a comfortable handle and stitching that is neat and even.

After the walk

Rinse off salt water and heavy mud with fresh water, wipe dry and hang the lead up rather than leaving it coiled in a wet pocket.
