Autumn brings some of the best walks of the year: crisp mornings, golden parks and quieter beaches. It also brings darker evenings, wet ground and new hazards. This checklist keeps every walk safe and simple.

Before you leave

  • Collar fitted correctly, with an ID tag showing your name and address
  • A strong lead with a secure clip
  • Poo bags and a small towel
  • Water for longer walks

Be seen in the dark

Evenings draw in quickly from October. Wear something reflective yourself, choose well-lit routes near roads and consider a light or reflective tag for your dog. Keep your dog on the lead near traffic when visibility is poor.

Watch for seasonal hazards

Fallen conkers, acorns and mushrooms appear on many walking routes in autumn. Discourage your dog from picking things up, and speak to your vet straight away if you think they have eaten something they should not have.

Muddy paws and wet kit

Keep a towel by the door and wipe paws and legs after every walk. Waterproof collars and leads can simply be wiped clean and left to dry, so they are ready the next morning.

Plan days out

Autumn is a good time for trips further afield. If you are driving, make sure your dog is properly restrained in the car, as the Highway Code expects.
