Many UK buses, trains and the London Underground welcome well-behaved dogs, which makes car-free days out with a small dog very achievable. A little preparation keeps the journey calm for your pet and comfortable for other passengers.

Check the operator’s rules first

Rules differ between operators and can change, so check the conditions of carriage for your bus company, train operator or TfL before you travel. Bus drivers can refuse a dog at their discretion, for example if the bus is very busy.

On the London Underground, dogs that are not assistance dogs should be carried on escalators. A backpack carrier makes this much easier and safer than carrying your dog in your arms.

Why a carrier helps

  • Your dog is secure and cannot wander under seats or into the aisle
  • Escalators, stairs and crowded platforms are easier to manage
  • Many small dogs feel calmer in an enclosed, familiar space
  • Your hands stay free for tickets, rails and bags

Before you set off

Travel outside peak hours where you can, give your dog a walk and a toilet break first, and carry water and a small towel. Short practice trips of one or two stops help your dog get used to the noise and movement.

Be a considerate traveller

Keep your dog off seats, give other passengers space and have bags ready for any accidents. A calm, contained dog makes it easier for operators to keep welcoming pets.
